Government Institute of Garment Technology (G.I.G.T) is one of the oldest Institutes in India, which imparts professional education in GARMENT MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY, FASHION DESIGN and business related to fashion. Diploma holders of this Institute have already become or are on the threshold of a career as designers and entrepreneurs. After independence of the country it was named as Govt. Industrial School. In 1968 it was upgraded to Govt. Institute of Garment Technology and affiliated with Punjab State Board of Technical Education.

The diploma of Cutting and Tailoring was changed to diploma in Garment Manufacturing Technology. The Three Years Garment Technology Course trains students to cater to the management manpower needs of the rapidly growing garment industry. During 1995 a new diploma in Fashion Design has also been started in this Institution. The students qualifying from this course can diversify in to Fashion Designers, Pattern Maker, Stylists, Fashion coordinator etc.   Objectives The Govt. Institute of Garment Technology catering to the needs of rapidly growing readymade garment industry, which has to meet the challenges of the global market. Govt. Institute of Garment Technology provides professional expertise to the industries which is vital in the immediate contests of our national aim of strengthening its potential of meeting foreign exchange earning and generating self employment .The Fashion Industry demands creativity and flair for art together with a sound technical knowledge base vital to mass manufacturing. While creativity and art continue to play an important role in fashion. G.I.G.T has emerged as premier Institution in the state to train professional who can meet the requirements of the Apparel Industry.   Departments  1. Fashion Design 2. Garment Technology Hostel Institute provides hostel accommodation to out station girl's students. There are 60 rooms for stay in the hostel and 3 students share each room. The rooms are well furnished and ventilated. The hostel has good modernized mess, recreation room and common room. There is also a parent guest house and STD facility for hosteller. Hostel students must abide the rules and regulations of the institute and no students are allowed to break these rules.
